Mixed Ages

This is the essential Music Together® class, one that a child can attend from birth through age five—and through all nine song collections. This basic class follows the recommendations of child development researchers—grouping children of a variety of ages in one class. This approach fosters natural, family-style learning where younger children enjoy watching and imitating older ones; older children learn by leading younger ones; and adults are happy because the children in the family can go to class together. Each child participates at his or her own developmental level in singing, moving, chanting, listening, observing, or exploring musical instruments. We welcome the whole family to join in this important family music experience and any caregiver—parents, grandparents, nanny—can bring the child(ren) to class.

Big Kids

You may be considering "next steps" for your 5, 6, or 7 year old. The Big Kids Family Music® program helps your child take those next steps in music development by keeping the elements of Music Together that you and your child love and adding new activities, skills, and challenges that are developmentally appropriate for 5- to 7-year-old children.

As you know, Music Together mixed age classes support Basic Music Competence. Big Kids classes focus on developing Basic Music Literacy, which in turn lays the foundation for both formal music instruction and a lifetime of joyful music making.

Children this age are eager to take on leadership, and Big Kids provides a safe, familiar, fun environment for growth, with activities like conducting and improvisation, story songs and "silly operas", game songs, and instrumental ensembles. We recognize your older child's new capabilities and provide a developmentally appropriate curriculum that includes solfege, instrumental solos, choreography, harmony singing and vocal development, drumming skills, and home activities.

To be eligible, your child must turn 5 by the first class of the session.
Classes are 60 minutes.

Parents may attend as many classes as they wish, but attendance is optional except for the first and last classes and a class in the middle of the semester.

Younger siblings may not attend, except for babies eight months or younger on the first day of class.

Younger siblings may attend the first and last 10 minutes of class.
This class will be offered in the fall, winter, and spring sessions

Babies

Babies eight months and under may take the special "Babies Class" offered as a one-semester introduction to Music Together. (This class cannot be repeated.) The music activities and materials are specially designed for parents who want to learn as much as possible about music development in infants. Meet other parents of newborns and learn some fascinating music activities you can recreate at home with your baby. This class is offered in the fall, winter, and spring sessions.

Mixed ages - 8 weeks

Mixed age class, with the emphasis on the interaction between the child and the accompanying adult(s). Classes meet for 8 weeks.

Big Kids Summer Camp

Our newest offering, Big Kids Summer Camp, is for children who have completed grades K - 2. This drop off program is five days of music making, dancing, and fun! We'll spend time each day doing activities from the Music Together Big Kids® Curriculum, world music drumming, the Orff approach to music learning, and creative movement, along with other musical activities. Send lunch, a drink (no milk products, please) and a nut free snack each day. Drop off is 8:45 AM to 9:00 AM (9 AM start), pick up at 4:00 PM.

Amost Big Kids

In our experience, most three and four year olds thrive in a mixed age environment, but there is a new option for the family with older children who aren't quite old enough for the Big Kids Class. (Discuss your child’s readiness for this class with the school director.) In this family-style class, which still looks very much like a mixed-age class, you and your child may experience additional musical activities such as rhythm improvisation, independent singing, dance improvisation, and dramatic play. Teachers work with individual skill levels and interest. Younger siblings are welcome to attend the 3s/4s class with their older brothers and sisters.

Singalong Days

Join us for a special singalong class! We'll sing our favorite Music Together songs and dance for 45 minutes of family fun. The price for these classes is $15 per child per class; infants younger than 8 months attend free with an older sibling. This is not a regular Music Together class; no materials are provided.

Rhythm Kids Level 1

Rhythm Kids™ is an exciting music, movement, and drumming class that follows through on Music Together’s vision to help children complete the pathway of early childhood music development from birth through age 8. Rhythm Kids is segmented into two developmentally appropriate programs, Rhythm Kids Level 1 for children ages 4–5 and Rhythm Kids Level 2 for children in Kindergarten, first, and second grades. Both are designed to help children integrate and assimilate rhythm through:

• Learning multicultural drumming patterns in unique animal groupings
• Developing new repertoire on various percussion instruments
• Exploring movement and dance while singing songs
• Playing games based on music and drumming
• Drumming along with Tom at home via online Rhythm Kids tutorial videos

In Level 1, parents/caregivers must attend with their child. In Level 2, parents/caregivers are encouraged to attend and are always welcome, but are not required to be in class. Because of insurance requirements, however, parents of Level 2 children must stay in the building during class. Classes are 45 minutes long.

In addition to the tutorial videos for families and teachers, another exciting aspect of the program is its curriculum content: approximately half of the songs and chants have been newly created especially for Rhythm Kids. The other songs, selected from the Music Together song collections and sometimes specially adapted for the Rhythm Kids curricula, are chosen for their appeal and learning potential.

First Notes is honored to have been chosen as a third year pilot site for this exciting new curriculum.
